Genre is one of the most readable signals on a bookshelf — but only if you know which genres actually correlate with personality traits rather than just taste.

High-signal genres

Self-help

A large self-help section almost always indicates a self-improvement mindset — someone actively trying to change their habits, career, or thinking. Often correlates with entrepreneurial tendencies or a recent major life transition.

Philosophy

Philosophy readers tend to be introspective, analytical, and often introverted. They're comfortable sitting with difficult questions. Often found in academic or analytical professions.

Fantasy & Science Fiction

Strong imagination, comfort with complex systems, and often active participation in fandom communities. Sci-fi readers skew more analytical; fantasy readers skew more narrative-driven.

True crime

Fascination with psychology, motive, and justice. Often found alongside psychology or sociology books. Usually a strong curiosity about human behaviour.

Low-signal genres

Romance and thriller are widespread enough to be weak signals on their own — almost everyone reads them. Look for what surrounds them instead.
